Become a maritime pilot
Take the helm of your future: become a maritime pilot on the St. Lawrence River
Are you passionate about navigation and ready to take on a challenge worthy of your talent? A career as a maritime pilot opens the door to an elite profession where expertise, precision, and responsibility meet in a spectacular environment: the economic corridor of the St. Lawrence River.
A journey marked by excellence
Before becoming a pilot, one must gain experience at sea. Candidates must hold a master mariner's certificate for ocean-going or coastal voyages and have several years of maritime experience as a captain or deck officer.
Once these conditions are met, future pilots become apprentice pilots. This is followed by a rigorous training period of at least two years, guided by seasoned experts. During this stage, pilots develop complete mastery of navigation in one of three specific sectors of the river (Les Escoumins / Québec – Québec / Trois-Rivières – Trois-Rivières / Montréal), one of the most complex and strategic waterways in the world.

Recruitment Process
We are responsible for the recruitment process for apprentice pilots between Les Escoumins and Montreal.
The candidates selected as apprentice pilots, who will become licensed pilots after an apprenticeship lasting between 18 and 36 months, are independent professionals who provide their services to SLP through one of the two pilot corporations of which they are members.

Obtain a pilotage certificate
It is prohibited to operate a vessel in a compulsory pilotage zone unless it is operated by a licensed pilot or a regular member of the vessel's crew who holds a pilotage certificate.
A Canadian citizen or permanent resident who holds at least a coastal captain's license issued by Transport Canada may obtain a pilotage certificate for one of the pilotage districts or sectors under the jurisdiction of SLP.
For eligibility requirements, please refer to the Pilotage Act and the General Pilotage Regulations.
