Becoming a Pilot

To acquire the knowledge and expertise required to qualify as a pilot, candidates must hold a navigation officer certificate and must have completed ten years of maritime experience, many of them as a ship's captain or senior officer.

When applicants fulfill all the conditions to become apprentice pilots, they I have to fallow a minimum period of 2 years as apprentice pilots. Once qualified, the pilot will be a navigation expert for a given sector of the St. Lawrence River.

The Laurentian Pilotage Authority is constantly looking for qualified applicants to become pilots. We periodically post recruitment notices on our Web site. Interested persons are invited to subscribe to our newsletter in order to receive recruitment notices.
